Luton vs Burnley
English Premier League Starts 20:30 (GMT+2)
Following their historic first-ever Premier League victory, Luton Town is set to host Burnley at Kenilworth Road on Tuesday in a rescheduled match.
Despite a recent 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United, Luton Town managed to secure a 2-1 win over Everton over the weekend. This victory lifted them out of the relegation zone and into 17th place. Earlier, they had earned their first-ever Premier League point at home against Wolverhampton Wanderers, although they were eliminated from the EFL Cup by Exeter City in a third-round shock. Nevertheless, they bounced back at Goodison Park, with Tom Lockyer and Carlton Morris contributing to a dream first half for Luton Town.
This triumph not only ended a four-game winless streak but also marked their maiden Premier League win. The fixture against Burnley was originally scheduled for August but was postponed due to Kenilworth Road renovations.
This season, Luton Town has seen both goals scored and conceded in each of their three competitive fixtures at their home ground. However, only one team has emerged victorious with a clean sheet in 2023 at Kenilworth Road, and that was Burnley. In February, Burnley secured a 1-0 victory in the Championship at the same venue. But while Luton Town bounced back from a midweek defeat, Burnley’s spirits were dampened after a 4-0 victory over Salford City in the EFL Cup.
Burnley faced disappointment in their recent match against Newcastle, where Miguel Almiron’s brilliant strike put the Magpies in the lead. Burnley’s Alexander Isak later converted a penalty awarded for a foul on Anthony Gordon. Burnley is yet to secure their first Premier League victory this season since moving up from the Championship and is currently above the bottom of the table only due to a better goal difference than Sheffield United.
Although Burnley’s only point this season came from an away match, a 1-1 draw against Nottingham Forest, they are now at risk of going three Premier League games without scoring for the first time since April 2022. Additionally, Burnley has not kept a clean sheet in their last nine Premier League away matches since their victory over Brighton & Hove Albion.
Luton Town will have to contend with some injury concerns, including the absence of Albert Sambi Lokonga and other players like Gabriel Osho, Jordan Clark, and Dan Potts. However, Ross Barkley is likely to return from a thigh problem. On the other hand, Burnley has no new injury concerns after their recent loss to Newcastle, and they will have Lyle Foster available after a three-match suspension.
While Foster may make a quick return, several other players like Michael Obafemi, Hjalmar Ekdal, Darko Churlinov, Benson Manuel, and Nathan Redmond are expected to remain sidelined until after the international break. Johann Berg Gudmundsson is also uncertain due to calf tightness, but Burnley has alternatives in Anass Zaroury and Wilson Odobert for the wide positions.
