Newcastle vs Everton

Premier League

Everton seeks to halt their extended winless streak as they head to St James' Park to take on a resurgent Newcastle United in the upcoming Premier League fixture on Tuesday.

The Toffees matched their longest stretch without a Premier League triumph by suffering a defeat at Bournemouth during the weekend. Meanwhile, Newcastle, despite facing several injury setbacks, staged an impressive comeback to clinch a thrilling victory over West Ham United.

Saturday's early clash witnessed one of the standout encounters of the Premier League season, with Newcastle staging a remarkable turnaround to snatch victory from the brink of defeat against West Ham. Despite trailing 3-1 and losing three players to injury, Newcastle, with Harvey Barnes' late heroics, secured a dramatic 4-3 win, much to the delight of their fans at St James's Park.

Interestingly, this win marked the first time since 2019 that Newcastle rallied from a two-goal deficit to win in the Premier League, a feat they previously achieved against Everton, their upcoming opponents.

The victory narrowed the gap between Newcastle and West Ham to just one point, as Eddie Howe's squad aims to chase down the seventh-placed team in the pursuit of European football.

However, defensive lapses have plagued Newcastle, with the team conceding three or more goals on ten occasions this season, resulting in over 50 goals conceded. Yet, facing Everton, who have struggled in front of goal this season, may alleviate some concerns for Newcastle.

The upcoming fixture marks the seventh consecutive midweek meeting between the two sides. In their previous encounter in December, Everton emerged victorious with a 3-0 win, temporarily overcoming their offensive struggles.

Despite improving their shot count this season, Everton's goal-scoring remains lackluster, with only Sheffield United having scored fewer goals. A disappointing performance against Bournemouth saw Everton suffer a late defeat, further extending their winless streak to a club-record-equalling 12 Premier League games.

With Everton hovering just above the relegation zone and facing a potential points deduction, securing a result against Newcastle becomes crucial. However, Everton will be without Anthony Gordon due to suspension, while Miguel Almiron's injury adds to Newcastle's selection woes.

Newcastle's lineup is expected to feature Barnes following his impactful performance against West Ham, with defensive absentees posing challenges for the team's backline. Meanwhile, Everton may see changes to their starting lineup, with the possibility of Dominic Calvert-Lewin being benched due to his goal drought.

Both teams are likely to field competitive lineups as they seek vital points in their respective campaigns.
